My semester at Oasis of Hope Center is coming to a close. After the Christian Community Health Fellowship Conference in Atlanta next week, my time here (and at Grand Valley) will be over. Although much of my feelings on this internship are spoken of in the paper under the "reflection" tab, I wanted to take a moment to speak of some of the ways the people at Oasis wished me "good luck" during my last days in the clinic. (I don't believe in "goodbye"s, only "see ya' later"s)
Outside from being a good friend and a phenomenal nurse, Rita really encouraged me regarding my future as a Physician Assistant. I could never thank her enough for providing positive support during the application/interview/decision making process of choosing a school to attend, performing tasks around the clinic, and reassuring me that I have what it takes to succeed on the next level.
I'm Part of Something BIGGER...
On my last Monday at Oasis, Barb Grinwis pulled me into her office to present me with some gifts. I had no idea that she was going to do this, and I am still in awe over her generosity.
Barb provided me with a "Physician Assistant Starter Kit" which included (but is not limited to) a reflex hammer, tuning forks, a monofilament for diabetic neuropathy checks, and "cheat sheets" for every one of the different rotations I will go on as a PA student.
The most meaningful gift to me, however, is the stethoscope Barb presented me with.

For those of you who do not know, Barb's license to practice as a Physician Assistant will need to be renewed by the passing of her boards in 2016. However, Barb has decided that she is going to retire instead. With that in mind, Barb did not want to see the stethoscope that she has used since her days in PA school go unused So she presented it to me.
Sure, it is just an item. But thinking about the many patients that have been cared for, the countless prayers that have been prayed, and the comfort that has been provided by Barb while wearing that stethoscope around her neck gives me the feeling that I am part of something bigger than myself. With that stethoscope around my neck, I can join the mission of creating healthier communities, building stronger relationships, and positively influencing the patients I will encounter everyday during my practice.
And I am honored and enthralled to do so.
